THE hp FINITE ELEMENT METHOD FOR SINGULARLYPERTURBED PROBLEMS IN SMOOTH
نویسنده
چکیده
We consider the numerical approximation of singularly perturbed elliptic problems in smooth domains. The solution to such problems can be decomposed into a smooth part and a boundary layer part. We present guidelines for the eeective resolution of boundary layers in the context of the hp nite element method and we construct tensor product spaces that approximate these layers uniformly at a near-exponential rate.

Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Bending of Straight Beams Using hp-Spectral Approximations
Displacement finite element models of various beam theories have been developed using traditional finite element interpolations (i.e., Hermite cubic or equi-spaced Lagrange functions). Various finite element models of beams differ from each other in the choice of the interpolation functions used for the transverse deflection w, total rotation φ and/or shear strain γxz, or in the integral form u...
متن کاملhp-Spectral Finite Element Analysis of Shear Deformable Beams and Plates
There are different finite element models in place for predicting the bending behavior of shear deformable beams and plates. Mostly, the literature abounds with traditional equi-spaced Langrange based low order finite element approximations using displacement formulations. However, the finite element models of Timoshenko beams and Mindlin plates with linear interpolation of all generalized disp...
متن کاملHow High a Degree is High Enough for High Order Finite Elements?
High order finite element methods can solve partial differential equations more efficiently than low order methods. But how large of a polynomial degree is beneficial? This paper addresses that question through a case study of three problems representing problems with smooth solutions, problems with steep gradients, and problems with singularities. It also contrasts hadaptive, p-adaptive, and h...
متن کاملComputation of the band structure of two-dimensional Photonic Crystals with hp Finite Elements
The band structure of 2D photonic crystals and their eigenmodes can be efficiently computed with the finite element method (FEM). For second order elliptic boundary value problems with piecewise analytic coefficients it is known that the solution converges extremly fast, i.e. exponentially, when using p-FEM for smooth and hp-FEM for polygonal interfaces and boundaries. In this article we discre...

Various finite element models of beams differ from each other in the choice of the interpolation functions used for the transverse deflection w, tota...
